Bringing a sweet mix of electro-indie sounds to The Triffid in Newstead, three-piece Canberra band SAFIA ended its Australian Starlight Tour with a bang Thursday 8 November.
The show started with supporting act Genesis Owusu, a fellow Canberran who is known for blending jazz with hip hop to create a genre he refers to as ‘21st Century punk-jazz.’ Soon, it was time for SAFIA to bring their Starlight magic, opening with crowd favourite, Over You from their 2016 album Internal. The energy of the band only got more electric as they continued through the set, giving the crowd some classics like Make Them Wheels Roll, Cellophane Rainbow and one of their more recent hits, Freakin’ Out.
Of course, the banger we were all waiting for was Starlight. By this point, the energy of both the band and crowd was at full force, with fans climbing on their friends’ shoulders to get the ultimate mosh pit experience. The addictive beat of the new track made dancing inevitable and even though the crowd was cramped up and rubbing shoulders in that intimate yet stuffy space, everyone was too invested in the experience to care.
Colourful laser lights ran across the walls and ceiling, while the band members had us jumping to see them running around the stage and playing their array of instruments with full commitment and passion. Ending the night with their best dance tracks like My Love Is Gone and Embracing Me, SAFIA fans left The Triffid satisfied and most likely still dancing.
