Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) will play host to the largest quilt convention in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time, the Australasian Quilt Convention. The event, which runs from May 26 to 29 (10am – 4.30pm), will showcase the best quilts from around Australia, along with some amazing international works.

Additionally, the convention offers a plethora of learning opportunities with convention classes from a myriad of the top quilters from around the country, including Rachaeldaisy, Loani Prior, Heather Hopkins and Gloria Loughman. Gloria and Loani will also be hosting the Thursday and Friday evening lectures respectively where you will hear about their personal craft and quilting stories.

If you can only come for a few hours, there’ll be hands-on learning sessions and free seminars. And you can catch some of your favourite exhibitors demonstrating their products throughout the day. They’ll share tips and tricks to make patchwork, sewing and other craft techniques easier

One of the things that makes AQC extra special is an outstanding collection of quilt exhibitions – many of these will only be seen at AQC. We curate a unique exhibition, our tutors bring their award-winning quilts, we have special guest displays, we hold an annual challenge and several new exhibitions will premiere at AQC.

The AQC challenge is themed ‘Going Green’. Quilters were challenged to create a work reflecting the theme and responded with interpretations in fabric and stitch. Thirty finalists from all corners of Australia, from New Zealand and South Africa will be displayed, with winners announced at the Cocktail Party on Wednesday May 25. There is also a Viewer’s Choice Award so you can vote for your favourite.

And talking of the Cocktail Party, there are lots of opportunities to socialise at the event. After the last two years, we want to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy themselves and mingle with like-minded quilt enthusiasts, with the Cocktail Party on the Wednesday evening and the Gala Dinner on the Saturday night, where a number of awards will be presented.

Once you have gathered all the inspiration that you need from the classes and the quilt show, you will be able to shop for everything you need on the Expo floor. Come for an hour or be a VIP with a Gold Pass and come for all four days – just be sure to be there.
