West End architecture practice Kin Architects received the 2024 Emerging Architect Prize from the Institute of Architects in Queensland, with the East Toowoomba Renovation awarded House of the Year and a regional commendation.
East Toowoomba Renovation distils and blends an abundance of ideas to become a highly personalised, intentional home that prioritises shared spaces and a strong connection to the landscape. It’s a design inspired by togetherness, informed by considered practicality, and infused with moments of magic.
Kin Architects said this project was all about working with their clients to create a home entirely suited to their needs and the way they live – in this case, as a young family with a strong extended community and a love of gathering together. Their ongoing project Headland House is also making huge progress. Sitting on a lovely oceanfront site, it embraces its surroundings and becomes a retreat for the clients: a dedicated place to relax, entertain, and host their friends and family.
In a departure from the common boxy homes of the area, Headland House’s stately presence is softened by the distinctive curved edges of the exterior form, which are echoed throughout the interiors as well. The design navigates the conditions of the site – including close neighbours on either side – to filter light, ventilation and a natural connection deep into the home. A screen of alternating solid and glass bricks along the northern edge allows light to infiltrate the length of the home, while mitigating any sightlines into the interiors to preserve privacy.
The team at Mactech Constructions have been working on the sea wall and holes for the screw pylons. Kin Architects invites everyone to keep up with the progress on their Instagram.
