Brisbane has been recognised as Australia’s best city for sustainable transport on the global Sustainable Cities Mobility Index, ranking 48th overall, and featuring as the only Australian city listed in the top 50.

The Index assesses transport mobility across three areas of sustainability – social, environmental, and economic – giving an indicative ranking of 100 cities worldwide.

Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage said Brisbane’s ranking was a strong reflection on cross-government collaboration and partnership.

“World experts in sustainability have shown us the evidence that active transport systems set cities up for future growth and enriched quality of life for all citizens,” Ms Savage said.

“Brisbane’s ranking is a credit to cross-government collaboration and strong investment in bold transport systems which will move us into the future in new ways. There can be no doubt that new cycleways and bikeway infrastructure has helped to improve Brisbane’s liveability, delivering value for money and a nicer world in which to live, work, and play.”

The report, published by Arcadis and endorsed by the World Economic Forum, found that cities who had invested in innovation and planned for future growth achieved the greatest sustainability and quality of life benefits.

“Safe, sustainable transport systems depend on the decisions of policy makers and planners in response to the challenges of rapid urbanisation,” Ms Savage said.

“We commend the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council for their joint investments in active transport, which have helped Queenslanders to shorten their travel times while enhancing the reliability and safety of local transport networks.

“All Queenslanders can be proud of this achievement, which demonstrates bikeways offer us a brighter future.”

The report found that by delivering its major public transport infrastructure in sync with other key sustainable and smart investments, Brisbane is poised to lead the region in city development and the knowledge economy.
