As part of the Brisbane Metro project, Brisbane City Council has announced it will introduce two new metro lines to meet the increasing demand for fast, frequent and reliable travel between the suburbs and the inner city. The development will also enable additional suburban public transport services and expansions to the busway networks. Integrated metro, bus and rail services on a turn-up-and-go high frequency network will provide the transport capacity to help support future growth of the economy and population.

Metro 1 will link the Eight Mile Plains and Roma Street busway stations, while Metro 2 will connect the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital to The University of Queensland’s busway station. In addition, a new underground station will be delivered at the Cultural Centre, providing an uninterrupted connection between the South East Busway and Victoria Bridge for metro and bus services.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced funding will be allocated to two thirds of the project’s capital cost as part of the Council’s 2017-18 Budget, with the Council also seeking a contribution from the Federal Government for the remaining capital cost. “World-class public transport like Brisbane Metro is a key part of Council’s plan for more buses for the suburbs, fewer cars on the road and more travel options for residents,” said the Cr Quirk. “Planning is also underway for the procurement phase, with the delivery strategy for the project released to industry in February.”

The Council will release a draft design report for the Brisbane Metro system in April, which will describe the construction and operation of the project in detail. The public is invited to contribute feedback on the draft report and assist the Council in the project.
