Well the Holiday Season might be over, but what to do now? How about a visit to the Imaginaria?
Located near the Queensland Maritime Museum, ie at the bottom of the Goodwill Bridge, the Imaginaria is family friendly and airconditioned. A great boon in the hot (maybe?) Queensland summer. The day I visited was uber sticky and the airconditioning was working overtime.
What is an Imaginarium you ask? According to various dictionaries – it is a place devoted to stimulating the imagination. Dah. Basically, the Imaginaria has several spaces for people to chillax and enjoy the immersive experience of sound, light and technology.
It starts with an ‘air bubble’ room which surrounds people in colour and sound; then move to a hall of mirrors where changing images are reflected on all surfaces. (I could spend hours in this room). There is also a fabulous movie with beanbag-type seating which allows people to ponder the amazing images projected onto the big screen. Many people gathered around the AI to witness the interaction between the AI ‘person’ and anyone who steps up to ask a question. The children were particularly enamoured with the variety of experiences. It’s not a huge installation but there are plenty of places to sit and let the children more fully engage and wonder.
Be sure to wear socks; but if you forget, the staff can provide ones for you. The place was not crowded when I attended but, to ensure you miss the crowds, try early morning or later afternoon.
