Submissions are now open for the annual Griffith Review novella competition. The winning entries will share in a $25,000 prize pool, supported by Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, and will be published in Griffith Review 66: The Novella Project VII. Judges anticipate that a minimum of five works will be selected, but there is potential for this number to be varied.
There is no theme for the 2019 competition and original works of both fiction and creative non-fiction are eligible. The preferred word limit for works is between 15,000 and 20,000 words, however, this is not firmly enforced and some exceptions may be considered. Entries are open to any Australian and New Zealand residents and only one piece of work may be submitted per author.
All entries must be submitted electronically alongside a short author bio on a separate page. Authors must also pay the entry fee of $30 for Griffith Review subscribers and $60 for non-subscribers, and this payment must be made before the time of submitting.
The deadline for submissions is the 29 March 2019. The winners will be notified no later than 30 May 2019 and the new edition of The Novella Project will be published the following November. Winning works will also undergo a professional editorial process prior to publication.
