Petbarn Woolloongabba is welcoming Brisbane locals to celebrate Guinea Pig Appreciation Day on Monday 16 July to honour the estimated 537,000 guinea pigs living in Australia.

Local Petbarn Woolloongabba Store Manager Carmila Fliege says Guinea Pig Appreciation Day is a fantastic way to celebrate the joy the furry little friends bring. “We are excited to be celebrating Guinea Pig Appreciation Day in-store for this first time this year,” said Carmila. “Our small mammal experts will be on hand to assist with any questions, provide tips and help locals stock up on the best products for their guinea pig friends.”

Dr Adam Sternberg from Greencross Vets says despite being less popular household pets than dogs and cats, guinea pigs are terrific animals bursting with energy. “When they’re feeling excited, a guinea pig is known to start ‘popcorning’- a common behaviour where they jump around in excitement,” said Adam. A study undertaken on ownership of pets in Australia revealed the main reasons for acquiring a guinea pig was for companionship, teaching children responsibility, relaxation and being lower maintenance pets. “Small mammals, in particular guinea pigs, can make fantastic pets and are great for Brisbane locals who are living in an apartment or smaller space. They also make a beautiful small pet for children and teach them how to be responsible and care for an animal.”

Through Petbarn’s charitable arm The Petbarn Foundation, Petbarn have helped re-home guinea pigs on behalf of their partner animal shelters. Importantly, while the adoption fee set by the local charity is collected by Petbarn, 100 per cent of the fee is returned to the charity.
