Steve Potts’ motivation to volunteer is simple – he likes to help people. As a volunteer at the Vinnies Queensland Shop in West End, every customer he helps also helps someone in need in his community.

I come from a customer service background myself, so I enjoy helping customers,” he said. But it’s not just the customers I can help here, it’s great knowing every sale I make goes towards supporting local community services to help people in need.”

Mr Potts said he had some extra spare time and wanted to do something that would get him out in the community helping others. I’ve actually had to call on Vinnies in the past after I started volunteering working there when I was falling behind on my rent and they were able to help me out. It’s a great place to work and rewarding to be able to use my experience to help out my community. I would recommend anyone to give volunteering a go!,” he said

For National Volunteer Week 2021 (17 to 23 May), Vinnies Queensland CEO Kevin Mercer said it was an important time to recognise and celebrate the contributions of our volunteers. Our Society is dedicated to helping Queenslanders experiencing poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, family issues and crisis situations and the work we do would not be possible without our volunteers,” Mr Mercer said.

From working in our 140+ shops throughout the state and raising proceeds for their communities, to supporting people in need at our call centres and providing education and mentorship to migrant communities and youth and students at risk, our volunteers are making a real difference to their communities.”
