Pasifika Film Fest (PFF) is proud to partner with the Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BEMAC) on its return to the Australian film festival circuit this year at Queensland Multicultural Centre on 27 and 28 September. PFF showcases a variety of Pacific cinematic content, showcasing the diversity of storytelling through the eyes of talented creatives from across Oceania.
PFF has brought a slice of paradise and culture to the silver screen since its inception in 2013 and this year’s fest brings a selection of short and feature length films from the Pacific to Brisbane audiences. Highlights include the debut of Sydney emerging filmmaker Carmen Smith’s film Panguna on the film festival circuit. This personal story investigates how Veronica, played by Smith’s mother, navigated her way through conflict with a white Australian husband on one side, a warring village deep in the islands of Papua New Guinea rebelling against a gold and silver mine and her family’s disapproval of her new found love.
Another anticipated film is Leiti’s in Waiting, which tells the story of Joey Mataele and the Tonga leiti’s, an intrepid group of native transgender women fighting a rising tide of religious fundamentalism and intolerance in their South Pacific Kingdom. After hitting the festival circuit, the film and it’s subjects have sparked a number of equality and human rights campaigns including petitions calling for the decriminalisation of homosexuality across the Pacific.
More information on the filming schedule and tickets can be found on the Pasifika Film Fest official website.
