Emerging and established artists from regional, remote and rural Queensland are invited to enter the ninth annual Queensland Regional Art Awards, with $25,000 worth of prizes and a chance to have their artwork join a touring exhibition on offer.
Queensland is a state full of diverse ecosystems, wildlife, places, people and personalities. This year, artists are encouraged to enter works which explore the diverse elements and qualities that make up their own communities and locations within Queensland.
The $10,000 Art for Life award sponsored by Holding Redlich, State Library The Edge Digital Art Award one week residency at the State Library of Queensland and the $3000 Annie Tan Memorial Watercolour Award are some the 8 prizes available to support the practice of regional, remote and rural artists.
Winner of the 2018 Art for Life award, Rockhampton artist Erin Dunne with her artwork Destination Duaringa, says winning a prize in the Queensland Regional Art Awards has been transformative for her art making practice. “The Queensland Regional Art Awards is an incredibly important platform for regional artists that allows us to have our work judged by industry experts in a rigorous process, to then tour if selected and thereby reaching new audiences, and if you’re lucky enough to win a prize, that financial support enables further development of your practice,” said Dunne.
Artist Donna Davis, the recipient of State Library The Edge Digital Art Award 2016, and prize winner in 2014 and 2012, says opportunity to complete a one-week residency at The Edge presented valuable skill development opportunities. “The residency provided me with valuable skills and develop professionally, allowing me to understand the capabilities and limitations of certain digital technology, and the opportunities available for me to do further work at ‘The Edge’ through their public Lab program,” said Davis.
