Poca Madre is a charming new Mexican restaurant located in the heart of Southbank. Its open undercover outdoor dining area ensures breezes from two directions adding to the alfresco ambience.
The restaurant’s desert themed décor consists of warm earthy tones that are reminiscent of a relaxing sunny holiday. While the restaurant has been artfully designed to have no bad tables, I liked our seats in front of the kitchen as it was great to watch the hive of activity and see all the incredible meals.
Once we were seated our accommodating waiter brought out a bowl of corn chips with their delicious guacamole while we perused the menu. We started with the Fried Calamari which was sliced thinly and very tender, possibly some of the best calamari we have ever tasted. For the Comidas (mains) we ordered the Matambre S Kidman Flank steak and the Polo Y Maiz chicken breast which both came with warm flour tortillas.
The steak was cooked medium rare, and the chicken was tender but both meals could have possibly been improved with a side of salad to add into the tortillas. I will admit that for a Mexican restaurant I was expecting these meals to be a bit more flavourful, but as someone who does not particularly like spicy foods I enjoyed it. For dessert we ordered the Chocolate Lava Cake which was flooded with a sweet caramel sauce as well as the Spanish delicacy, Churros, that seemed quite authentic. I would recommend to people planning their trip to Poca Madre to consider ordering a few plates to share with each other so that you can taste more of their food.
Poca Madre at Southbank is a brilliant family-friendly dining experience that brings the exciting Mexico atmosphere to Brisbane.
