Former Socceroos striker and coach Frank Farina has applauded Brisbane Central Futsal for helping the indoor game flourish.

After being involved with the Socceroos as a player and coach in a record 127 matches over 17 years, Farina’s praise comes with much weight as one Australian football’s most respected figures. Farina played for Australia for more than a decade during which time he led Belgium’s FC Brugge to the 1990 Championship thanks largely to a personal haul of 24 goals that earned him the best foreigner award. Farina, who went on to coach the green and gold for six years before serving as Sydney FC coach between 2012-2014, reckons Brisbane Central Futsal are kicking some serious goals.

Brisbane Central Futsal is dynamic in its approach, having youth development and competitions (Euro Academy, Summer League), social (men’s, women’s and mixed) and professional pathways (F-League’s Fire FC). It also runs open competitions via the Southern Cross Futsal League and World Cup.

Farina had particular praise for the Brisbane Central Futsal-presented upcoming World Cup which sees competitors from AfghanistanSolomon IslandsColombiaRomaniaAustraliaNew ZealandVirgin Islands and more battle it out for $4,000 in cash. And in regards to Fire FC’s granting of an F-League Licence Farina said, “That’s great news for them and the league as the F-League makes it return,” he said.

Farina said youth, social and professional pathways were so important to the success of futsal in Australia moving forward. “Futsal is such a social game, but junior pathways are also really important too,” he said. “The younger players get involved in the game the better, the game is going well in Australia and growing all the time.”
