The Time Is Now is a political theatre piece coming to Brisbane’s La Boite Theatre and is the first all-teenage cast in a main-stage show for La Boite.

This performance is focused on young change-makers and gives a voice to the current generation, showcasing the power theatre has to elevate these voices. The Time is Now provides a platform for a generation that is used to being dismissed and silenced. La Boite is welcoming the all-teenage cast for the first time onto the main stage after 96 years of business in a critical show that puts the youth of today front and centre.

The Time is Now transports the audience to the future in the eyes of 10 young teenagers, aged 12 to 17. These switched on and politically educated young Queenslanders span diverse cultures, backgrounds, and political views providing a well-rounded view of what the future could be. The performance uses powerful speeches alongside movement, dialogue, and surprise cameo appearances to rouse up and empower audience members of all ages.

These teenagers round out La Boite’s Young Artist Company, a program for high-school students aged 12-17 to improve their performing skills by connecting them with industry mentors and fellow young actors. The teens are taught skills in acting, live performance, ensemble training, and the process of putting on a theatre production. This resulted in their production, The Time is Now which aims to teach them the skills needed for performing for the public in a space such as The Roundhouse Theatre.

The Time is Now was co-created by Ari Palani, Aleea Monsour, and David Burton and will debut from 24 May to 5 June. There will be eight performances in La Boite’s Roundhouse Theatre. The cast consists of Omalkire Akil Ahmed, Huda Akhlaki, Jessica Boyd, Joe Cranitch, Sophia Ferreira da Luz, Diali Kemp, Rachel Kennedy, Zander Pynenburg, Carys Walsh, and Fujia Sarah Xu.

This powerful performance cements that children should be seen and heard and that the time is now for change.
