The 2018 Brisbane Writers Festival (BWF) will welcome more than 200 internationally renowned writers, thinkers and opinion makers to the State Library of Queensland from Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 September.

Coming to the 56th year of the festival, BWF has brought the writers and the audiences with the question “What does the world need now?”, exploring the big ideas. This year BWF will be showcasing some of the world’s most influential thinkers, each bringing their own unique vision for tomorrow to Brisbane. Ideas as far ranging as raising teens to ending epidemics, politics and the environment, culture and identity and all things writing will be open for discussion over three days of readings, debate, special events and free public sessions.

Acting CEO Ann McLean said that the program this year gives audiences the chance to think about the future they would like to create for themselves and come away with real, actionable ideas for positive transformation. “We all have an idea about what the world needs now. It’s something we’re all talking about be it at home over the dinner table, at work or online,” she said. Furthermore, the program this year offers the audiences many opportunities to hear diverse perspectives on the issues that are shaping our world right now.

The Festival kicks off with human rights barrister Geoffrey Robertson Q.C. talking about his new book Rather His Own Man, following the by bestselling author of the Divergent series Veronica Roth. Author of The Devil Wears Prada Lauren Weisberger,  Scottish playwright Irvine Welsh, Aussie rock legend Tim Rogers, Australian children’s author Mem Fox, science commentator Dr Karl Kruszelnicki AM, author of The End of Epidemics Dr Jonathan D. Quick, and many more prominent speakers will be part of the Festival.
