Pan Macmillan Australia (Sydney, Australia) has announced that Holocaust survivor, debut author and self-declared ‘happiest man on earth’ Eddie Jaku is the author of the #1 bestselling title in the country.

Since its publication on 28 July – debuting at #1 non-fiction – Eddie Jaku’s incredible story of resilience and hope has inspired and touched booksellers, journalists and thousands of readers around the country. Non-fiction publisher Cate Blake says, “It’s not every day that you see a 100-year old debut author, but Eddie is a very special person. The Happiest Man on Earth is one of the most powerful and uplifting books I have ever read, and it is such a privilege to be working with him.

“As Eddie says, happiness is the only thing that doubles each time you share it, and it’s been wonderful to see people sharing his words and wisdom everywhere. This is a book that will stay in readers’ hearts for a very, very long time,” she said.

In April this year, Eddie celebrated his 100th birthday, though not quite as he had planned. Life for the father, grandfather and great-grandfather has changed, as it has for many around the world. While Eddie is yet to visit a bookshop – as he has been in lockdown since the launch – he and his family have been touched by the many letters, emails and messages and are hugely appreciative of the support. Eddie is choosing to donate his royalties to the Sydney Jewish Museum.

Eddie said, “I want the world to be a better place and hope humanity might be restored a little by reading this book. I also say to you: never give up hope. It is never too late to be kind, polite, and a loving human being. Your friend, Eddie Jaku.”

Powerful, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful – in The Happiest Man on Earth Eddie Jaku shares the wisdom gleaned from a century of living and his blueprint for a life filled with happiness.
