Local Councillor for the Gabba Ward of Brisbane City, Jonathan Sriranganathan, has moved on from his role at Brisbane City Council.

Cr Sriranganathan’s last speech in the Council chamber was on 28 March and his last official day was 21 April. In his seven years as a councillor, he has been heavily involved with protests, rallies, and other political clashes. Cr Sriranganathan cited some of these public clashes, especially with the police, as one of his reasons for resigning.

“Like a lot of people who step down from busy, high-scrutiny leadership roles, I’m leaving this position so I can spend more time with friends and family, devote more time to creative pursuits, and have a decent holiday” Cr Sriranganathan said. “However, I’m also stepping down because I don’t think it’s healthy for democracy when elected representatives hold onto the same safe seat for decades, and I believe periodic renewal is important in all leadership positions.”

The local Greens branch has also named his replacement, announcing Trina Massey as the new Gabba Ward councillor as of May. Ms Massey will then face the public via general election in March 2024.

The Greens will be hosting a party for Cr Sriranganathan and Ms Massey on 29 April to commemorate the change in leadership. The night will feature live music, dancing, and a free vegetarian barbeque. Both the former and future Gabba Ward councillors will be there, and local community organisations will have the opportunity to talk to the group about the work they do or promote an upcoming event.
