Horn Trio collage

Musica Viva Classical Trio

Published on May 19, 2021 | in Arts

Musica Viva Australia is presenting a national tour of must watch classical musicians from 9 to 26 June 2021.

Curated by Musica Viva’s Artistic Director Paul Kildea, the trio features three extraordinarily talented soloists, brought together for the very first time to perform works by Mozart and Brahms, as well as a new Australian work from composer Gordon Kerry. The ensemble will comprise of one of the world’s leading French Horn players, Nicolas Fleury, alongside London-based violinist Emily Sun and world-renowned pianist Amir Farid who will perform for Brisbane audiences on 11 June.

French-born Australian resident, Nicolas Fleury’s beautiful tone is most often heard in his current position as Principal Horn for Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He appears regularly as a guest Principal Horn in numerous orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, and Sydney Symphony Orchestra among others.

A multi-international prize winner, London-based violinist Emily Sun was awarded the 2018 ABC Young Performer of the Year and UK Royal Overseas League ‘Commonwealth Musician of the Year’, performing at Buckingham Palace, Wigmore Hall and Tchaikovsky Great Hall in Moscow. As a concert soloist, Sun has appeared with orchestras worldwide, including the Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony, Queensland Symphony and Canberra Symphony Orchestras in Australia; Arlington Symphony, Arizona Symphony and Garland Symphony Orchestras in USA; Shanghai Youth Orchestra and Qingdao Symphony Orchestra in China; European Union Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de Royal Wallonie and Orchestre de Chambre Namur in Europe.

Amir Farid has performed as a solo recitalist and collaborative artist in concert halls and festivals internationally, including Carnegie Hall New York, St. Martin in the Fields London, Mostly Mozart festival at Lincoln Center New York, Al-Hashemi-II Kuwait, MONA FOMA Festival Hobart, Coriole Festival SA, Huntington Festival NSW, as well as other venues in USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand and China. Farid is a staff pianist at the Vocal Arts department of the Juilliard School, New York City, and works as a rehearsal pianist with the New York Philharmonic.

The program will open with an arrangement of Mozart’s Horn Quintet by Ernst Naumann for piano, violin and horn which offers a rare opportunity to hear the French horn placed squarely in the spotlight, and showcase the virtuosity of Fleury. The second work is the world premiere of Sonata for Violin and Piano (2020), a piece from one of Australia’s most accomplished composers, Gordon Kerry, commissioned by Julian Burnside. And rounding out the program will be Brahms’ Horn Trio, a piece written in memorial of Brahm’s mother, following her death in 1865.
