Captain Marvel has been one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2019, which is not surprising but rather comes with the territory of being a part of the Marvel cinematic universe.

However, this film brings much more to the table than the Marvel brand. Captain Marvel, starring Oscar Winning Actress Brie Larson as every girl’s new hero Carol Danvers, is an action-heavy, witty, and thoroughly entertaining standalone film. Our first glimpse of Brie Larson’s performance is of Lieutenant Veers. A determined and skilled soldier for the Kree Empire. With a memory that only stretches back six years and unexplained super powers, Veers is the Kree’s most loyal and valuable new recruit.

The story then crash lands into a mid-90s America, established through subtly hilarious reminders of a past time – think Blockbuster video stores, CD drives, and painfully slow internet searches.

Veer’s presence attracts the attention of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury, played by Samuel L Jackson, who tags along as Veers tries to uncover her forgotten memories and finish her mission. Both characters, with their individual charms, form a strangely enjoyable pair. Their banter is subtle and genuine, and their fast friendship is genuinely a joy to watch on screen.

Through the help of her new acquaintances and old friends Veers didn’t know she had, Veers recovers her memory of her time on Earth and her true identity, Carol Danvers. Unsure who to trust and what side she is fighting for, Carol must fight adversities from all angles. The film’s action scenes are weaved throughout Captain Marvel’s journey of self-discovery, amalgamating in a final showdown of Marvel’s typical ‘universe altering’ magnitude.

Captain Marvel is a must see for all die-hard Marvel fans, as the final scenes create an obvious set up for the upcoming Avengers film ‘End Game’. Carol Danvers will undoubtedly be part of the clean up for the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War.
