Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton have unveiled their fourth collaborative effort Something Is Going to Change Tomorrow, Today. What Will You Do? What Will You Say?, an album that explores relationships of all kinds.
Beat Magazine, which recently interviewed the duo, describe the record as being “packed with life-affirming odes to camaraderie, love and acceptance”. The album is truly a collaborative effort, with friendship at its core. With old pals Snowy and Dylan filling out the rhythm section, the band recorded in studio with Good Morning‘s Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons at the helm. Although all of the songs were again penned by Emma & Lachlan, the recording saw all members of the band as well as Stefan and Liam getting involved in production.
Emma and Lachlan’s debut collaboration When It Ends was recorded in one day in an Abbotsford share house, where Lachlan was taking refuge after the break down of a long-term relationship. One of the residents, Quivers front man Sam Nicholson, was kind enough to let the pair use his room and piano to record for the day. What came out of this was ten songs of lo-fi folk pop. The release was low fuss, but the reaction of friends and family, and the joy of the experience, had the pair keen to do more.
Six months on, the band were back together, this time with friends Snowy and Dylan in tow to fill out the songs on bass and drums respectively. The release was again a low fuss affair titled Keep On Trying. Spunk Records then came on board to re-release the two albums as a single compilation under the title The First Two Albums. With Spunk on board, and Spanish label Bobo Integral eager to be involved in the next release, the pair set about recording their third album, Take The Reigns. Although it was starting to feel like something a little bigger than first intended, Emma and Lachlan continued to approach recording with the same sense of openness and easy going attitude as they had with the first two records.
