Gold Coast axe throwing venue Lumber Punks has opened on Montague Road in West End, an unconventional past time where Lumber-goers throw axes onto a giant dart board made up of concentric scoring circles. The game is comprised of five rounds, each with five throws, with everyone flinging their axes towards the pattern of concentric circles.

Each thrower takes turns throwing their axes in seperate and dedicated throwing lanes and all participants are guided through the process by trained staff. Owners Tyson McMillian and Sam Hay, had their business idea when the pair were throwing axes in the backyard. Co-owner Sam says that axe throwing is a safe and therapeutic way to relieve the stresses of day-t0-day life. Axe throwing grew from backyard origins to its first commercial venture in Canada 10 years ago.

The strictly alcohol-free venue hosts groups of friends and is described as a unique location for birthday parties, bucks or hens nights and corporate functions. The owners assure that axe throwing it is more about mastering technique rather than strength. All demographics have become involved in the sport with statistics showing that 40 per cent of throwers are women. For throwers looking to expand their skill set beyond the social sphere, there is opportunity to become involved in a competitive league. The sport of axe throwing is synonymous with lumberjack competitions and is practiced in locations across the world including, the USA, Canada, England, Ireland and Australia.

Lumber Punks also offers coaching to all levels from beginner to experienced, with the focus always being on having a good time in a safe environment.
